Echo & Ass & Titties present – M.I.A.

“I have the most interesting record,” rapper-producer Maya “M.I.A” Arulpragasam told us recently. Now that Rock Daily had a chance to check out Kala (due August 12), we totally agree. For starters, the one Timbaland-produced cut (”Come Around”) is the most conventional track on the album. There are also bird calls, Indian drummers, rapping Aboriginal children and eerie glitch-and-grind beats that’d make Thom Yorke puke with envy. With M.I.A. spitting catchy rhymes and id-channeling reveries, the overall sound is something like a inimitable female MC collaborating with robots and ghosts in a jungle — thickly detailed electro-rap both primal and futuristic. – Rolling Stone

Black Hollywood

28 07 2007

UGHH - Camp Lo is back! The Sonny Cheeba and Geechie Suede duo return with their highly anticipated album called “Black Hollywood”, produced exclusively by the legendary Ski Beatz. Fans of Camp Lo’s 1996 debut classic “Uptown Saturday Night” album will surely be satisfied by the group’s return with an updated version of their infectious Bronx soul that the group is known for and their lyrics that consist partly of Blaxploitation-style Dadaist slang. Making their first appearance on “The Great White Hype” soundtrack, their smooth party song single “Coolie High” was a minor hit, peaking at #25 on the Billboard Hot Rap Singles chart. The first major exposure came with the release of their second single, the upbeat and horn driven “Luchini aka This Is It”. The song became a crossover hit in 1997, breaking into the top 50 on the Billboard Hot 100, and reaching the top 5 on the Hot Rap Singles chart. The duo released their debut album in January 1997. The effort was widely acclaimed, praised for their light accessible content and their smooth, funk and jazz inspired production. They went on to release a sophomore album called “Let’s Do It Again” in 2002. Jump ahead to 2007 and be prepared for the arrival of a new Camp Lo, produced by the one and only Ski Beatz. Previously known just as Ski, Ski Beatz is best known for his work with Jay-Z on the album “Reasonable Doubt”. He’s also produced tracks for AZ, Lil’ Kim, Fat Joe, Foxy Brown and of course he did almost the entire Camp Lo debut album “Uptown Saturday Night”.

5 Suga Willie’s Revenge featuring Jungle Brown

Finding Forever

27 07 2007

commonfinding.jpg

Amazon – Multi-faceted Hip-Hop superstar Common is prepping his highly anticipated seventh album, Finding Forever, for a July 31st release on G.O.O.D Music/Geffen Records. The album is the follow up to the four times Grammy nominated, critically heralded and Kanye West produced Be, which spawned hits including The Corner, Go, and Testify. Finding Forever, finds Kanye again taking the bulk of production work with help from Will.I.Am on the sultry I Want You, the late great J. Dilla on So Far To Go, featuring a surprise guest appearance by D’Angelo and G.O.O.D Music producer Devo Springsteen on Misunderstood. On Finding Forever, Common, rips the mic like a hungry newcomer. The street single The Game produced by Kanye with scratches by the legendary DJ Premier is a horn drenched, vintage NY rap boom-bap banger from the Chi-town emcee, no less. The resounding lead single The People finds Common lyrically asserting why and who he creates his music for over regal strings, delectable keys and hard to get vocals by Gil Scott Heron.

Not only do you get the 2 amazing tracks on Side A from “Beats, Rhymes, & Life,” but also the exclusive Q-Tip and Rah Digga duet “Mardi Gras at Midnight” with the trademark Jay Dee Ummah track, and Tip’s marvelous one-verse manifesto “Same Ol Thing,” which appeared on the “Men In Black” soundtrack. A nice one for the collection…
