fatbeats – A modern day genius, Madlib continues to prove his place in musical history. It still boggles our mind how Madlib has been dope for this long but continues to be on the fringe of mainstream music. Give any talented MC one of these beats, and listen to them spit to the future. Not just straight instrumentals though, Madlib always provides a captivating listen with interludes and samples from who knows where?

LAphil - The versatile and multi-talented Queen Latifah revisits the jazz repertoire for her debut appearance at the Hollywood Bowl on Wednesday, July 11, at 8 p.m. Queen Latifah delivers jazz standards, R&B and selections from her upcoming release, Trav’lin’ Light, in a performance that kicks off the 28th year of the Jazz at the Bowl series. Developed by Christian McBride, the Carolyn and William Powers Creative Chair for Jazz for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, the 2007 Jazz at the Bowl series is comprised of eight concerts that feature jazz heavy-weights and rising stars.

A one-woman empire, Queen Latifah has steadfastly conquered many facets of the entertainment industry. Her latest endeavor brings her back to her first love – music. Trav’lin’ Light is the much anticipated follow-up to the critically acclaimed and Grammy-nominated The Dana Owens Album, her first foray into jazz, blues, and soul. Trav’li’n Light features an A-list of jazz musicians, including Christian McBride, who also serves as bassist and musical director for her July 11 Hollywood Bowl appearance and other scheduled concerts. This is Queen Latifah’s only appearance in Los Angeles this summer, before she launches a fall tour.

Songstress Goapele, dubbed a “homegrown neo-soul phenom” by URB magazine, and “chanteuse-in-the-making” by Billboard, opens the show, also making her Hollywood Bowl debut.

Yesterdays Universe

7 07 2007

ynq.jpg

Filter – YESTERDAYS NEW QUINTET Yesterdays Universe – 90/100%
Bad news first: Madlib has officially broken up with himself, which subsequently disbands the 12 other bands that makeup Yesterdays Universe, due to those bands being made up of… (breath)… Madlib. Good news is, on the madhatter’s second long-player under the YNQ moniker, Madlib serves up an immense throwback jazz explosion that successfully avoids being the sort of jazz/hip-hop/fusion/catshit that you would hear pulsing at you in a J.Crew or your finer pant/sweater outlets. Moments like “Street Talking” push and sizzle like a David Axelrod jam and “Free Son” whips out Headhunters fuzz bass. One alias that stands out in the mix is Sound Directions, under whose guise Madlib released the full-length Funky Side of Life in ’05. Yesterdays Universe, while “existing” in the same vein, makes the Funky Side seem like simple porno music (but damn fine porno music, at that). Even more enjoyable than the record is imagining Madlib trying to play this music by himself, some smoked-out, stomping humanimal of a one-man band that eats cool and shits out stone-cold funky.

Kero One presents – Pluglabel

6 07 2007

kero-one.jpg

Plug Music Label – Kero One has been rhyming, deejaying and collecting records since the early 90’s. Influenced by such groups and albums such as Gangstarr’s “step into the arena”, Nas’s “Illmatic”, Lord Finesse, Pharcyde, Common Sense and N.W.A., Kero One was truly drawn to emceeing and rhyming. However, it wasn’t until the age of 15 when he began getting down in freestyle ciphers at shows, hiphop clubs and writing his own lyrics. Inspired by college radio and freestyle battles such as the “Hieroglyphics Vs. HoboJunction battle on KMEL’s legendary Wake Up Show, he would participate in radio shows, such as the Bay Areas 10 O’clock Bomb freestyle battle segment. There he would spit verses and receive props and recognition from Wake Up Show host “Sway”. In 1996, he began collaborating with friends to record tracks and enjoyed working with different producers. However, demanding “that specific sound” from various producers was harder than originally expected. Kero then decided to take things into his own hands. He would now begin his venture as an emcee, producer and deejay.
