Price:$49.50
The Greek Theatre
2700 North Vermont, in Griffith Park
Los Angeles, California 90027

After selling out their August 20 show, the Beastie Boys have added a second night at The Greek Theatre on August 19. Hip Hop masters Mike “Mike D” Diamond, Adam “MCA” Yauch and Adam “Adrock” Horovitz kicked off a summer’s worth of worldwide touring in May, which includes a performance in July for Live Earth at Wembley Stadium. The trio has created such popular hits as “Sabotage,” “So Whatcha Want,” “Paul Revere,” and “Intergalactic,” among many more.

Who would have thought that a punk band thrown together for its bass player’s 17th birthday party would evolve into one of the most influential and groundbreaking successes of its time? Certainly not the then-teenage Beastie Boys, yet the band’s 25-year-and-counting career has logged more than 40 million records sold, two Grammy awards, the MTV Video Vanguard Lifetime Achievement award, four #1 albums–including the first hip hop album ever to top the Billboard 200, the band’s 1986 debut full length, Licensed To Ill, and countless sold out world tours, magazine covers and TV appearances.

Introducing the Scion Hypeman Contest

14 08 2007

One of the most underestimated elements of live hip-hop is the importance of a dope hypeman.

Aside from DJs, producers, and MCs, an often overlooked aspect of live hip-hop is the back-up MC and party host, commonly referred to as the Hype Man. Scion’s Hype Man Contest is aimed at discovering the quintessential rhyme spitting master of ceremonies.

Are you hype? You got the skills and knowledge to capture mass appeal? Can you get the party crackin? Be the first Scion Hype Man!

Submit a DVD of your hype man skills. 30 winners will be chosen, and each will be sent to one of three contest markets in Atlanta, Chicago and Los Angeles in mid October, 2007. All thirty heads will scrap, battle and compete in a live video taped audition program that encompasses numerous rounds of Hype Man tests and scenarios.

Each audition will be moderated by hip hop society legend Ricky Powell, who is well versed in the history of hip-hop, and has experience being in front of a crowd and a camera. Ricky will work the stage with a DJ to test the skills of each Hype Man while evoking questions and reactions from the esteemed three-judge panel comprised of DJ Clark Kent (Jay-Z, Biggie Smalls), Skillz (Jazzy Jeff’s hype man), Anthony “Ant” Marshall (Lyricist Lounge).

Each of the three regional audition/contests will produce one winner (and an alternate) that will receive $2000 and a spot on an upcoming Scion Live Metro US Tour alongside past artists such as Talib Kweli, Ghostface Killah, De La Soul, and GZA, ect…!

Log on now to http://www.scion.com/hypeman for official rules and entry information on how to submit a DVD-taped example of your hype man skills!

MF Doom @ El Rey

10 08 2007

doom.jpg

Sun, Aug 12. | Goldenvoice Presents:
@ El Rey Theatre | 5515 Wilshire Blvd | Los Angeles | CA | 90036
MF Doom
with The Gaslamp Killer,
Pacific Division

Doors @ 8pm | $25.00

Patterning his persona and logo after the Marvel Comics supervillain Dr. Doom, the man behind MF (Metal Face) Doom’s iron mask is actually Daniel Dumile, aka Zev Love X, a member of former Big Apple hip-hoppers KMD. MF DOOM’s lyrics are sometimes perceived as eccentric. With an abundant use of polysyllabic rhymes and bizarre metaphors, MF DOOM combines complex syntax with phrasing to create a rhyme flow that is both exhausting and entertaining. His songs commonly lack the typical verse/chorus structure in favor of showcasing extended rhyme schemes and strophic or repeating beats and melodies. – wikipedia.org
