Black Diamonds, the second offering from Jahshua Smith’s sophomore LP “The Fourth Wall” is a haunting take on police brutality – and unfortunately, Jahshua has had plenty of source material. “The very first time I attempted to write the song is when Oscar Grant was murdered,” Smith muses. “New incidents kept happening, until finally I decided to get it off my pad and off my chest.” Featuring some of Michigan’s top voices in activist-imbued hip-hop (Adam Reverie, James Gardin, and Red Pill), a hopeful chorus from PhourTheLove, and a downtrodden StewRAT as the canvas, the song uses nuanced perspectives to grapple with the idea of Black self-worth in the face of oppression.
