If you’ve been with KevinNottingham.com for a while, you may remember one of our niches from 2008 – 2010 was our weekly remix competitions. Back then we held contests for producers to remix classic albums such as Illmatic, The Blueprint, and Mama Said Knock You Out. With our remix competitions and sample compilations, we prided ourselves in being a producer’s community… and we still do. Which is why we’re bringing back our weekly remix competition for the 20th anniversary release of A Tribe Called Quest’s Midnight Marauders! Only this time, we’re doing it better. We’ve teamed up with iStandard Producers, The Certified Fresh Jumpoff, and producer extraordinaire DJ Pain1 to make this contest our best one yet.
Each week, for the next 14 weeks, we will provide you with an original sample used to create each track from the album. You will take that song and your skills, and sample it into a brand new creation… a remix, if you will. In some of our previous contests, we have provided you with the acapella to use in your remix. This project will not be using the acapellas from Midnight Marauders. Instead, after we complete the 14 weeks of our beat contest, we will select some of your favorite emcees to rock over your beats (similar to how we did the Mama Said Knock You Out project). The finished project will be released by November, just in time for the album’s 20th anniversary!
PRIZES: In addition to being included on our 20th Anniversary Tribute Album to Midnight Marauders, the winner for each week will also receive a free account and teaser kit at iStandardProducers.com(courtesy of iStandard Producers).

The Video + Contest:
Last week, the illustrious singer-songwriter Jack Davey released the crown jewel of her three-part rock project, L0-F! D’Lux. The EP has pleasantly surprised both loyal fans of J*DaVeY and newfound listeners, who are all applauding Jack’s radical departure from electro-soul into a grittier grunge sound. With the onset of 2013 promising more new material from the sultry frontwoman, and possibly J*DaVeY, Jack is celebrating her accomplished solo debut with a new video for the song “Get Up!,” which Verbicide Magazine premiered this morning.
In keeping with the overarching DIY vibe of L0-F!, Jack reached out to her supporters for video submissions of them dancing to the distortion-heavy, upbeat single “Get Up!,” and tapped iLLaV8r’s creative director Nai Vasha to compile them into a master cut for the video. Among the clips are cameos from some of Jack’s famous friends, including Miguel, Tanya Morgan, Trackademicks, the staff of Converse’s Rubbertracks studio, and her very own J*DaVeY partner Brook D’Leau. Jack pops up in the video a couple times, but her intention was to spotlight the people who motivate her to create songs like “Get Up!”
Also today, Jack has teamed up with The Vinyl District for a very special giveaway. Not only will one winner receive a limited edition, hand-made physical copy of L0-F! D’Lux, but he or she will also win a vinyl copy of The Stooges’ self-titled debut album, widely regarded as one of the best proto-punk albums ever. “This is one of the most influential records for me before, during, and after the creation of L0-F!,” explains Jack. “I wanted to capture that same essence of their debut album with my own debut album. I feel deeply that Iggy Pop is my male counterpart – he’s my spirit animal.”

The Contest:
On October 30th, MHz Legacy, the long-time collective comprised of rappers Copywrite, Camu Tao, Tage Future, and Jakki Da Motamouth, accompanied by in-house producer RJD2, released their long-awaited debut album, the self-titled MHz Legacy. Now, as thanks to all those that helped to make the album such a success, MHz Legacy is giving aspiring producers the opportunity to remix one of the album’s biggest singles, the Blu-featuring “Yellow + Blue.” 2DopeBoyz, Native Instruments, FLüD Watches, Akomplice Clothing, Man Bites Dog Records, and Audible Treats have joined forces and are proud to present the “Yellow + Blue” Producer Remix Contest.
After downloading the acapella of “Yellow + Blue” via SoundCloud (the link can also be found below), contestants will have two weeks to craft their best beat and submit their remixed version of the single, to be judged by MHz Legacy and their label, Man Bites Dog Records.
There will be one grand prize winner and two runners-up.
