Sum “Excuses” ft. Malkovich & Airon Azure [mp3]

19 12 2012

Tri-coastal lyricist Sum presents “Excuses”, the new single from his new album Dragon, Volume 1. Wielding a versatile, virtuosic style developed between his hometown of Chicago and his adopted hometowns of Charlotte, Atlanta, NYC and now Los Angeles, Sum was first introduced to us via his albums The Lil Folk, Lone Wolf, animated hip-hopera The Nobody Hole and his future-funk collective The Milky Way. “Excuses” also features L.A. emcee Malkovich and Chicago singer Airon Azure, and is produced by Needlz, best known for his work with 50 Cent and Bruno Mars. Last year Malkovich and Sum dropped a music video to their song “What I Know” (watch here). “This song is a shout to people who take responsibility for their destiny, no matter how stupid they were in the past,” says Sum about “Excuses”. Dragon, Vol. 1 is available for free download at sumkilla.com. Click here to watch the music video for first single “Timeless”, produced by Ski Beatz.

Boxguts “Ronald Ruck” ft. Malkovich [mp3]

12 11 2012

Brooklyn-based emcee Boxguts presents “Ronald Ruck”, featuring L.A. emcee Malkovich and produced by IDE. “Ronald” is a track from Hot Bref Boy, Boxguts’ new mixtape featuring verses from LoDeck, JakProgresso, Sum, Mike220, C-Plex, Leeroy Destroy, LABAL-S, Burt Diesel, Red Ox, HaacWon and Gin-I Grindith as well as production from Badtouch, Will Taubin, Ethix, K.C., Pulla Kong, Maliks and SebRox. “Hot Bref Boy is mostly just me spittin with the people I like to rhyme with. A few concept oriented tracks, but mostly just me letting the grill steam,” says Boxguts. “I’m real proud to showcase ‘Ronald Ruck’ on this project. My verse mostly revolved around twisted animal lines. Wanted to really step my writing up with that verse.” Last year Malkovich released the House Shoes-presented Ayatollah Presley mixtape (watch the video for “WTF” produced by Dibia$e here) and recently released Lethal Vice, his collaboration EP with P.U.D.G.E. Hot Bref Boy is out now on Johnny23 Records.

Malkovich & P.U.D.G.E. – Lethal Vice **EP + Video**

30 01 2012

Los Angeles rapper Malkovich and NYC producer/rapper P.U.D.G.E. proudly present Lethal Vice, a free three-song EP where the duo invoke the spirit of Lethal Weapon and Miami Vice’s buddy-cop duos to tell some true L.A. stories. Vice is produced almost completely by P.U.D.G.E., who made his name alongside experimental beatheads like Dibia$e and Samiyam at L.A.’s Low End Theory weekly. Ali Baba Abnormal, Sum and Chris Clarke appear on the posse cut “Flatfoots”. Aaron Godfred (responsible for the 2010 movie Little Blue Pill) directed Vice’s ‘multi-music video trailer’, which rolls videos for all three songs into a movie trailer advertising the EP. “P.U.D.G.E. and I lived together in L.A. for a while,” says Malkovich. “Lethal Weapon was in our DVD player a lot and we noticed parallels between Mel and Danny and us. He’s the black guy, I’m the white guy. He’s more laid back, I’m more aggro. And we spent a long time together just trying to get by in L.A.” Malkovich dropped the Ayatollah Presley mixtape last year, hosted by House Shoes and featuring Prince Po of Organized Konfusion, Killer Reese of King Fantastic, IamOmni and many more.

Malkovich “JIM KONG ILL” **mp3**

19 12 2011

24 hours after the death of North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, Los Angeles-based emcee Malkovich drops “Jim Kong Ill”, the second single and title track from his forthcoming album based on the life of the infamous dictator. Malkovich dropped the Ayatollah Presley mixtape earlier this year, hosted by House Shoes and featuring Prince Po of Organized Konfusion, Dibia$e, Killer Reese of King Fantastic, P.U.D.G.E., Sum, IamOmni and many more.

MALKOVICH ft. SUM, “WHAT I KNOW” **Audio + Video**

1 11 2011

An unlikely Twitter connection was the catalyst for “What I Know”, a collaboration between L.A. emcee Malkovich and producer BecomingPhill, several thousand miles away in the southern African country of Namibia. The music video was shot in the Nevada desert near Las Vegas by director/rapper Ivan Ives, the talent behind recent videos featuring the likes of RJD2 and more. The song also features Sum, the emcee behind The Lil Folk and Lone Wolf albums as well as the hip-hop opera The Nobody Hole.

Malkovich – Palms **Audio + Video**

7 09 2011

A man dying slowly in the truck he calls home. Another, hauling boxes at a market in exchange for a spot in a storage box where he sleeps each night. Immigrants, actors, recovering drug addicts, college students and true blue Angelenos, all trying to rent themselves one more month in the waiting room, one more month for their dreams to come true. This is life in Palms, L.A.’s most diverse and densely populated neighborhood, where Snoop Dogg caught his murder case, and where “everybody’s on their way somewhere else”, as emcee and eight-year resident Malkovich says on his dedication to his adopted home. The people and places of Palms take center stage in the video, directed, filmed and edited firsthand by Malkovich. Shot one month before Kanye West & Jay-Z’s “Otis” video aired, scenes shot against a wall mural of the U.S. flag with a local homeless man inadvertently make this video the polar opposite of ‘Ye and Jay’s celebration of the American dream.
