Def Dee & Zar – Zulu Delta [EP]

22 01 2013

defDeeZarZD

Def Dee is heating up the Northwest this winter with some new production – this time with a new free Ep “Zulu Delta”. The young Seattle producer wanted to get heads open with something fresh from his crew. Enter ZAR. One of the most original and clever emcees in the Northwest, ZAR is used to spitting bars and breakin’ backwoods with the homie Dee since junior high. The years of chemistry show, as ZAR sounds right at home over Dee’s 96 inspired production. “Getting creative was the easy part… I was just trying to express my own personal interpretation of Hip-Hop,” says Zar, “This Ep was intended to show that there still exists classic lyricists.”

On other fronts, Dee continues to craft his hybrid warm-up project 33 an’a third (a mixture of unreleased verses, fresh spit, and remixes, all mashed together into sonic beauty), as well as his other MMG slated releases. In the meantime, tune your ears up with the new Ep ZULU DELTA.

Sean Born – Flood & Drain (prod. Kev Brown) [mp3]

28 11 2012

With the year coming to an end, Maryland emcee Sean Born is giving a new offering from his Behind the Scale LP in the form of a bonus track “Flood and Drain.” For the track, Born stays in-house with Low Budget producer Kev Brown and creates a song speaking to the definition of ebb and flow – bringing the flood to a sometimes dry hip-hop landscape.

7evenThirty – Akapelah @ Deep Ellum [video]

8 11 2012

It takes an inventive and creative mind to stand out as an MC in today’s crowded climate. 7evenThirty has a sound and style unlike any other. The Jackson, Mississippi native has spent years grinding, finding his sound for the album Heaven’s Computer – a concept LP that has been taking hip hop heads on a ride ever since it was released last month. 7evenThirty’s space age gangster narratives take the run of the mill gangster persona and complicates then deepens it by examining it in the context of other planets and space travel.

Recently, while out in Dallas, 7even made a pit stop to showcase his flow acapella and on camera. 7even spits his bars in front of an enormous metal space man statue, fitting as it almost hints at the fantastic world 7even weaves with his lines. The verse he spits is murder. 7even details how he’s a “Southern style sinner with sinister cynicism,” and spits acrobatic lines about “popping brains like pimples” and robbing Will Robinson before ending his verse with a new take on the southern slang of being dripped out and draped up.

7evenThirty’s Heaven’s Computer – a funky space age gangster story – is told in some of the coldest bars you’ll hear in a minute.

Apollo Brown & Guilty Simpson – Truth Be Told [mp3]

25 10 2012

Two Detroit titans, Apollo Brown and Guilty Simpson, are joining forces for a collaborative album on Mello Music Group. The album is Dice Game and today we’re happy to share with you the first track, “Truth Be Told”.

Unlike lightweight rappers “scared to face the reality of truth,” Guilty Simpson isn’t one to tiptoe around on the mic. “Truth Be Told” finds the Motor City rhymer bearing his soul over a slow-burning soul chop that is trademark Apollo Brown. Guilty’s usual ferocity is tempered by his introspection, reminiscing back to times when he was hustling and living fast but without direction. A sublime string loop gives Guilty’s monstrous mic presence center stage to tell his story, a specifically hood tale that is still widely relatable. Guilty punctuates his reflections with a worthwhile reminder: “You want change? It starts with you.”

Setting the tone for what you can expect on the full length, “Truth Be Told” hints at mature music, fundamentally sound hip-hop seasoned with substance and experience. With a monster behind the boards and a monster behind the mic, this is a Dice Game you don’t want to miss. November 13th, mark your calendars.

J. Bizness – Destination [video]

27 09 2012

J. Bizness’ Flight Plan is well over 30,000 feet at this point. The instrumental album from the LA producer took off in August and has been exploring the skies since. Today, Mello Music Group and director Erick Lee share the visuals for “Destination,” one of the more introspective, almost somber cuts from the LP.

Airports and plane travel in general have always had a bit of an introspective element to them. They are places of connections, departures and arrivals. Playing off the dramatic vocal chop, pulsating drums and emotive synths, Lee visually matches the mood by seamlessly combining shots of the people and planes that make travel possible.

Like a plane taking off just at dusk, “Destination” is moody and cerebral. You can catch a connection to Flight Plan at your local independent music retailer and online everywhere.

Quelle Chris “Milky” [video + audio]

26 09 2012

Mello Music Group recently announced the signing of Quelle Chris and already the hyper-creative MC is starting to let off shots. After Q-mixes, a set of heady, raw remixes, Quelle delivers Milky, a loose joint that is premiering today with an accompanying video.

Like a joyful walk through a sunny LA suburb, Quelle plays it cool with a laid-back visual for the equally relaxed track. Quelle isn’t trying to berate you with rhymes this go round, he is more interested in creating a mood. For the self-produced effort Quelle flips a ballad on its head, stretching and morphing it into an awkwardly wonderful canvas.

Clearly enjoying himself on Milky, even Quelle’s happenstance songs have an undeniable X factor. The man is hip-hop, straight up and down. Keep your ear tuned to Quelle Chris.

7evenThirty – Twenty Twelve [mp3] + Heaven’s Computer [album]

25 09 2012

7evenThirty is coming to reset the game. The Jackson, Mississippi rhymer has meticulously crafted a sound that is equal parts Outkast and Bootcamp Click. For his Mello Music Group debut, Heaven’s Computer, 7even is pulling out all the stops with a cosmic concept album that is just as much about ripping apart wack MC’s as interplanetary conflict.

To celebrate this apocalyptic moment MMG & 7even are letting off the buckshot, “Twenty Twelve.” As the title alludes, the track sounds like a Mayan prediction on wax. 5D flips a gritty rock loop into a raw serving of monster music and 7evenThirty turns into Max Redrum, an outer-space rhymer with fangs sharpened who has “psychiatrists rockin’ 3-D goggles smoking peace pipes” trying to see what he thinks like.

Resistance is futile. Heaven’s Computer has crash-landed and can be found infiltrating physical and digital outlets everywhere. There is no escape.

Substantial – “Release Party & Mini-Doc” [video]

20 09 2012

Late this summer, Substantial and Mello Music Group released Home Is Where The Art Is, an uncompromisingly raw and powerful collection of positive, forward-thinking hip-hop that Oddisee executive produced. The message has connected and is well received; the album has already garnered attention from places like VIBE and Ebony.

Substantial and MMG are proud to present a mini-documentary created by the good folks of House Studios. On August 23, 2012, filmmaker, Simon Kim followed Substantial as he prepared to introduce his 3rd solo album, ‘Home Is Where The Art Is’ at a live show unlike any other. The ‘Home Is Where The Art Is Album Release Event’ took place at LIV Nightclub in Washington, DC and featured performances & DJ sets by some of the DMV’s best Hip Hop acts, such as Oddisee, yU, Uptown XO, Gods’Illa, Lyriciss, Roddy Rod & others! Hosted by Grap Luva (cousin to the late great Heavy D) the event included live graffiti art by Rei21 and showcased his work along with pieces by Demont Peekaso. Throw in a Beatdown Showcase with J $crilla, Kaimbr, & Grussle plus DJ sets by DJ RBI, Roddy & DJ Jav and what you have is one unforgettable night. Thankfully, it was all captured on film for world to see.

The Black Opera – All Over Disguise (Apollo Brown Remix) [mp3]

11 09 2012

The Black Opera have quickly proven to be beacons of light in the game, emerging at a time when the landscape is fragmented. Their EnterMission. project presented them as faceless champions for change and forward-motion. Now partnering with Mello Music Group, they are releasing the physical manifestation of EnterMission. on Disc today.

They’ve enlists now label-mate Apollo Brown to put his midas touch on “All Over Disguise”, a cut from EnterMission. originally produced by Astronote. Apollo chops a string sample beautifully to craft a reflective slow burner takes the vibe of the original audio demonstration to a more contemplative place. TBO’s introspection is augmented with powerful lines like, “analogue to digital, man is lost and miserable / seeking more (moor) in general, Othello” – a clever Shakespearian nod to the Moorish General Othello on-top of a track that knocks.

The anonymous creative collective is currently perfecting their next musical installment, Libretto: of King Legend, due out this fall, but the CD version of EnterMission. drops today with the vinyl on the way!
