Legendary producer Ski Beatz is responsible for some of the most influential and instantly recognizable hip-hop beats of all time. As part of our ongoing Off the Record series, we caught up with the storied beatsmith to discuss a variety of topics – ranging from his early days as an emcee with Original Flavor – to the fateful introduction to Jay-Z which was a moment that would inevitably shift the North Carolina native from double duty to strictly a producer of classics.
Sacramento rhymesayer C Plus has come together with The DJBooth to offer a free, exclusive stream of his L.O.C.A.L. (Loyalty Over Cash and Luxury) street album. The project packs 15 original records by the West Coast buzzmaker, among them reader-approved singles “Deep” and “Girls on Drugs.” Joining C Plus on the guest tip throughout L.O.C.A.L. are Da$h, Fashawn, Jacka and N Pire. In addition to beats by Executive Producers Chase Moore and Hippie Sabotage, the mixtape features boardwork by Cozmo, N Pire, REL, Ski Beatz, Sledgren and Trox.
We recently linked up with legendary producer Ski Beatz and Sacramento rapper C Plus for a 5-song EP called The Extra Sessions that sees the duo continuing to paint a picture with narrative raps that fit Ski’s production history. Recorded in just a 48-hour time frame, Ski goes back to his original formula of producing records, and sees him re-teaming with C Plus who he worked with on 24Hr Karate School Presents Twilight. The Extra Sessions is a pre-release to a full album that will be dropping in the near future.

Planet X explores the more sensual lyrical side that some might be familiar with, and those that are just finding out about the NYC emcee will now see. He chose to lace the Ski Beats produced instrumental to lay the musical groundwork for him to talk his ish.”
