July 2024, last year,
We lost Sonya Massey to the hands of the police.
Amidst processing her tragic killing, I was building with my brother Tall Black Guy about expressing ourselves more in the moment as artists and challenging ourselves. TBG challenged me to make a beat using 3 James Brown records because I never sampled him before. It was mostly because I heard soo many classic Hiphop and R&B records that flipped James Brown since the 80s.

?? Challenge accepted.

My aim was to chop those records to fit how I was feeling about Sonya Massey’s story in that moment. TBG put me up on Jermaine Holmes after sharing some work he did with him. I wasn’t familiar with Jermaine’s work at the time, but I knew he had an ill voice and that he sang background for D’Angelo on the Black Messiah tour. Days after I made this beat, Jermaine posted he was open to do features on his IG. I sent this beat to him, without even mentioning what inspired it.
