FRSH SLCTS releases a new free single from the Baltimore-raised singer/producer/multi-instrumentalist known simply as Dolphin.

Today the enigmatic artist gives us “Inspiration,” a track based off of a loop from Gil Scott-Heron’s classic, “We Almost Lost Detroit” – a rare occasion where Dolphin uses a sample instead of playing all of the instruments himself. He explains why below.

“These are the times of shiny things in shadow times. However I believe a man who cries cause of pure intentions, will be prayed for by the Angels. Gil Scott is my father, my uncle, my brother. His demons are my demons, his hopes are my hopes. He’s more than a man of his generation, he was the spirit of his people, the struggle, the unheard. When creating this song I wanted to fulfill a personal dream and include him in the process. His voice alone is the painting, both the dream state and the nightmare. The song isn’t about the music, it’s about the rebel spirit, the conscious mind, indigenous freedom, our personal struggles, and our struggles as a country. It is my personal hope that this song will inspire, aid those in need, and provide optimism to those who have lost it. He was more than a musician, he was one of the last voices who truly represented his people – to lose him was to lose a thousand poets. I only hope I have done him justice.”
