Sapient Flips Macklemore’s “Thrift Shop” [video]
Sapient brings us along on a four and a half minute journey as he samples the saxophone lick from Macklemore’s hit “Thrift Shop†and spits a verse on a similar topic poking some tongue-in-cheek humor at the Grammy award winning emcee.
Sapient has been a household name in the Northwest for the past decade, defining the region’s sound through his production and rap style. Last year he dropped an Indie Rock album with Canadian record label Camobear Records, leaving fans wondering if he would abandon Hop Hop in favor of his new genre. This video shows he is still making Hip Hop, and is better than ever.
Filmed in his art/video/music studio, Sapient walks us through his steps as he samples Ryan Lewis’ beat, flips the sax riff, adds his own sounds and melodies, then steps to the mic to record an entertaining, yet impressive verse over his own “Thrift Shop†remake. This is an example of what makes Sape a diverse musician, and why he is a NW favorite.
