In this new era of music, artists have to do a lot more than just stand out, and bilingual Japanese-American rappers, Flow Zen and Kuga, are doing just that. The group hails from the west coast in the city of fog, San Francisco, and their music has embodied a Bay Area sound that features uniquely interesting and dynamic production. Their story begins quite humbly; the two rappers had been DJing together for several years when in 2007, in a hotel room in Osaka, Japan, they officially formed what would later become NjS, and the rest is history.

“The interesting thing is that the Japanese people prefer the lyrics to be in English even if they don’t understand it,” notes Kuga. “We’ve been making bilingual music for a long time, but recently we’ve been mostly just keeping our verses all in English.”

Since 2007 the two artists have had many successes, including earning spots on two Coast 2 Coast mixtapes (vol. 219 and 220) alongside artists such as Rihanna, Drake, Ne-Yo, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, E-40, Kendrick Lamar, B.O.B., Lil Flip, Young Jeezy, and Rick Ross.

NjS were finalists in the 2012 and 2013 USA Songwriting Competition, which yielded them top 10 worldwide in the hip-hop category, and they were semi-finalists in the 2012 and 2013 International Songwriting Competition, finishing in the top 10% out of over 20,000 entries.

Taking their music internationally has always been a central goal of NjS, and coming off their recent success in Japan, the two rappers appear ready to continue pushing forward, expanding, and chasing their dream.
