Quantic Presents the Western Transient – Creation (East L.A.) ft. Jimetta Rose [audio]

Quantic’s acclaimed Western Transient project, which explores the soulful instrumental jazz of the USA, is given a fresh spin with a new vocal version of “Creation (East LA)” featuring an uplifting performance from rising LA singer Jimetta Rose that turns this tune into an irrepressible soul-pop nugget. Out 5th February, the perfect antidote to deepest darkest winter, the single was launched with an upfront play from Raul Campos (KCRW).

The latest project from Will “Quantic” Holland, The Western Transient brings together some of his favourite musicians from LA, and across America, to realise a set of new compositions paying homage to the rich, lively and intimate quality of the classic soul and jazz recordings. In characteristically mercurial fashion, the ‘A New Constellation’ album saw Holland following up the worldly electronic and vocal direction of his last solo LP, ‘Magnetica’, with a suite of traditionally recorded pieces that capture the spontaneous beauty in the old ways of music making. Surprising and delighting fans on its release in July, the LP gained support from tastemakers including BBC 6Music’s Cerys Matthews, Gilles Peterson and Huey Morgan; KCRW, FIP, Radio Nova, Jamie Cullum (BBC R2); and love from Jazzwise, DJ Mag, Okayplayer, Wax Poetics and beyond. Singles including “Nordeste” and the original instrumental version of “Creation (East LA)” – as well as “Latitude (To The Point Version)” which was licensed as a theme tune by KCRW – have kept this vibrant project bubbling.

A song for winding your car windows down, “Creation (East LA)” is dedicated to many good times in East LA. As a native of the city and a regular collaborator with many of its leading lights, Jimetta Rose was the perfect choice to add another authentic flavour to this track, and jumped at the opportunity. “Quantic had expressed an interest in working together in the future, so when he called and said he had a song in mind I was stoked”, she enthuses; “When Quantic calls, you answer!” Having released two acclaimed solo albums, the singer, writer, poet (and musical theatre writer and star) applies her natural gift for interpretation and expression – as well as a love of Bootsy Collins and George Clinton – to Quantic’s luminous, disco-inflected jazz composition. “I always write and arrange in response to the story that is there within the music, and I think that some of my soul roots also definitely snuck into this song!”
