As Dot Da Genius — the producer behind Kid Cudi’s “Day n’ Nite” — refers to it, “a cheat code.”Al Green’s Gets Next To You is one of those records, and Dot makes it look almost too easy to rip a bassline as the backbone of his improvised beat. While dodging some Latin jams he feels are “too bodega,” he’s able to whip together a beat using pitched-down elements from the two other records. Thanks to New York’s own Academy Records, we get the grooving beat at the end.
