Molecules & Showbiz – A Bronx Tale [EP]

A Bronx Tale’ is a hard-nosed celebration of Hip-Hop’s birthplace from two of the borough’s toughest artists, Molecules and Showbiz. The rapper-producer duo previously worked together in various capacities, and mainly through their respective crews (The Legion and D.I.T.C.). And with this quick-hitting EP, the two are further cementing their already-storied legacy in Hip-Hop.

Given that it shares its name with a classic crime film, it’s only fitting that A Bronx Tale opens with a quote from the movie and follows in its mafioso footsteps. You can thank ‘Cules’ boot-to-your-throat rhymes for that, and he makes his intentions clear on the fittingly titled lead single, “Bad Guy,” featuring Money Ray. The emcees sound as confident as ever over Showbiz’s hard-hitting instrumental, and the slick talk and head-nodding beats continue from there.

That’s particularly true on the EP’s other single, “Hardcore.” The track features Molecules sharing the booth with Dres of Black Sheep, who the Bronx rapper credits for jumpstarting his career many moons ago. The two gel just as perfectly here as they did over 20 years ago with their tough-guy bars, thanks in part to Showbiz’s teeth gnashed instrumental tying it all together. And then there’s “Good Life,” an anthem for anyone living life to its fullest, and “Heist,” a cinematic narrative that we won’t spoil here.

At its core, ‘A Bronx Tale’ is the answer for anyone searching for some rugged Boom bap in 2017. ‘Cules and Show aren’t chasing trends on here, or even necessarily rejecting them; they’re just too cats from the Golden Era staying true to themselves. What more do you need?

‘A Bronx Tale’ is now available through al major digital retailers and streaming platforms via Legion Records, and can be purchased on CD or vinyl, courtesy of Fat Beats.
