Sarah Elizabeth Charles – Change to Come ft. Christian Scott [audio]

Singer/songwriter/teacher/activist, Sarah Elizabeth Charles, will release her album “Free of Form” on Oct 6th via Stretch Music / Ropeadope. Sarah’s album marks the first release on Christian Scott’s Stretch Music imprint, who also co-produced the album and is also featured on several tracks. The project also features Sarah’s veteran band members (known as SCOPE) which includes participation from Jesse Elder (keys), Burniss Earl Travis II (bass), and John Davis (drums).

The lyrical content on “Free of Form” takes on a bolder identity than her previous projects, touching on issues of mass incarceration, political ideology, police brutality, addiction, war and historical context. SCOPE’s sonic space is conceptually concise and adventurous w/ colors of jazz, soul, indie rock, R&B and electronic experimentation. This is by far the most universal and unique album from Sarah Elizabeth Charles.

Today check out the single for the song “Change to Come” which features Christian Scott on trumpet. The song was written in 2014, in the wake of Eric Garner’s death. Sarah was interviewed by NPR Music (who premiered “Change to Come”) and mentioned the song “is just general resistance to violence.” She further states that “it’s speaking to race relations and the issues that have existed because of the nature of the history and formation of this country.” You can check out the full interview here: http://www.npr.org/2017/09/14/550755437/songs-we-love-sarah-elizabeth-charles-change-to-come
