The Pendletons – Telling Lies (Original + Buscrates Remix) [audio]

Earlier this month Bay Area talents The Pendletons, made up of E Da Boss(of Myron and E on Stone’s Throw) and Trailer Limon, revealed the title track from their forthcoming EP ‘Funk Forever.’ Relieving fans familiar with the classic Pendletons sound, ‘Funk Forever’ unleashed a 1970s-esque groove loaded with old-school horn lines, jazz influences, and of course, a heaping dose of funk. Prior to the project’s full release on March 30th via Brooklyn label Bastard Jazz, The Pendletons are now giving us another glimpse into the project with two more cuts from the EP- “Tellings Lies” original single and Buscrates remix.

For the original mix of “Telling Lies,” the pair provide the perfect follow up to the ‘Funk Forever’ title track with a down-tempo slow-burner. Incorporating a lead bass-guitar melody, the track cohesively flows thanks to the inclusion of a horn section, Yamaha dx7 keys, and mesmerizing drum patterning. For the single’s remix, the duo have recruited Pittsburgh producer Buscrates to give the track a boogie facelift. Jazzing up the production, Buscrates emphasizes the funk theme of “Telling Lies” while infusing it with his own blissed-out synth runs and prominent hi-hat percussion.

If this is your first introduction to The Pendletons, the long-standing boogie-funk and modern soul project emerged with their very first release in 2010, a 7″ inch of “Coming Down/Waiting On You” on the Slept On record label. The record instantly became a cult classic receiving constant play at nights like San Francisco’s Sweater Funk and LA’s Funkmosphere, and fetching for serious sums among vinyl collectors. Most recently, in 2016, they released the EP “Gotta Get Out” whose title track caught the ear of renowned BBC Radio 1 DJ Gilles Peterson, who liked it enough to release it on his ‘Brownswood Bubbler’ compilation. As for the remainder of the ‘Funk Forever’ EP, expect to hear additional tracks including collaborations with Elive, Potatohead People, and Ishtar.

“Making ‘Funk Forever’ was a new process for us. Instead of starting with a beat, usually a sample by one of us, we went into the studio with musicians and recorded them playing together to get a more live sound. We wanted the energy of the musicians playing off each other to reach through. After we got a good framework, we went back and wrote the lyrics. Then we went through and added all the extra funky goodies, back-up vox, additional Synth horns and percussion. We are both really happy with the result and it’s fun to play it live.”
