What happens when Sun Ra Arkestra percussionist Elson Nascimento unknowingly shows up to The Du-Rites’ recording session unannounced for something unrelated? Our new single, “The Sun,” that’s what!

The veteran percussionist was looking for Pablo to record a quick idea, percussion rig in tow. He obliged – and got Nascimento on the then untitled new Du-Rites tune he’d been recording in the same session. The result is three minutes of cosmic, deep instrumental funk, driven by Jay laying down a swinging funk groove, turning every object in the studio into auxiliary percussion and running his combo organ through a wah wah pedal. Pablo’s psych guitar blitz and nasty bass bring the funk front and center, while Nascimento’s surdo drum bubbles underneath, giving the tune a constant, low-frequency earthquake rumble. And the best part? The session coincidentally took place on May 22, 2021, Sun Ra’s 107th birthday! A taste of what’s to come from The Du-Rites’ 6th release, Pressure, dropping this fall.
